About the Item

Throughout the mid-to-late 1800s, the American furniture market was dominated by European revival designs and as one of the country’s most distinguished furniture producers and interior design firms, Herter Brothers were masters of these styles. The present examples demonstrate Herter’s understanding and decidedly American interpretation of these forms with their innovative integration of Neo-Grec themes: The scrolled ears and restrained undulation of the seats show European sensibilities, as do the rolling, architectural arm supports of the settee and armchairs, the columnar arm supports and scrolling arms of the slipper chairs, and their sculptural knuckles. However, the acanthus design of the knuckles is inherently Neo-Grec, as are the meander pattern on the side of the slipper chairs’ stiles, the suite’s architectural arm supports, and the condensed classical trumpeted legs. The incised and gilded decoration and floral marquetry that enhance the legs and seat, respectively, are distinctive of Herter Brothers. This seating suite shares its floral patterned marquetry seat rails, beaded caster trim, and incised, gilded and trumpeted front legs with a side chair in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The same marquetry band also appears on a sewing chair similar to one made for the music room of the LeGrand Lockwood residence. Wear consistent with age and use. Original finishes and casters with minor scratches and losses on legs and bottoms of seat rails of slipper chairs. Decorative spandrels on one armchair, one slipper chair, and settee restored. Reupholstered.
