Rare & Important Japanese Gilt-Bronze Mirror By Mildred Warder
About the Item
Among Japanese scholars of interior design, Warder is largely credited with introducing the Western concept of interior design and furnishings to Japan. According to an article in the January 1959 issue of Interior Design, Warder overcame significant obstacles to produce elegant results.
The feature in ID includes numerous photographs of other Warder designs, which have the luxurious materials of Tommi Parzinger's work, as well as a subtle Asian influence, like a restrained James Mont. Warder's designs were sold in the US solely through the Fifth Avenue Takashimaya department store.
This wall mirror is framed in heavily cast bronze dore. On all four corners are bronze swans, with shell forms cast in the bronze frame on the top, bottom and sides. On the reverse of the mirror is an enameled metal plate that reads "Mildred Warder Designs, Made In Tokyo Japan," along with Japanese characters.
