"Tally Ho" Painting by Heywood Hardy
About the Item
Hardy is the youngest son of artist James Hardy, Sr. It is clear that he received his talent of painting animals from his father, who himself was successful at painting the four-legged companions of his esteemed clientele. At the age of 17, the younger Hardy struck out on his own to paint animals for a living. His success led him to borrow money from his brother, fellow artist James Hardy, Jr., and move to Paris where he enrolled in the École des Beaux-Arts in 1867.
Upon his return to England in 1868, Hardy realized that his art was in great demand. He was often summoned to large estates to paint patron portraits, animal portraits and sporting paintings. Though professionally he preferred and was very talented at executing genre scenes, it was his animal paintings that earned him acclaim in the art world.
In 1870, Hardy moved to St. John’s Wood, London, a popular artist destination. It was at this time that he was elected to the Royal Society of Painters and Etchers, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
In 1909, Hardy moved once again, this time to West Sussex. He embarked upon his largest and most controversial work, eight panel paintings of biblical scenes for the 700th anniversary of Clymping Church. The works, which are still on display at Clymping, depict Christ walking through the Sussex countryside, with local villagers of the day clearly recognizable.
