A Japanese Embroidered Picture Of A Polar Bear
About the Item
At the turn of the 20th century, Japan had created a very bouyant market for its export wares and all things polar were in demand. The North Pole was controversially claimed by Robert Peary in 1909 today, however, his claim has been discredited. The South Pole fell as a target for conquest to Roald Amundsen in December 1911. The wildlife of both poles became a source of fascination for Europe and America; however, Peary's apparent triumph for America was the culmination of a determined struggle begun back in 1886. To fund his expedition he trawled America lecturing and fund raising. It is no wonder that the polar bear would have become as famous as Peary himself.
