Antique Blue and White Savona Urn-19th Century
About the Item
In the 17th century Albisola (small town in Savona province) could boast some of the best majolica production in Europe, with the most widely made decorative pottery being the calligraphic-naturalistic Antique Savona, or blue and white, style. The 17th century is perhaps the period of its greatest splendour. Thanks to the work of the painter Giovanni Antonio Guidobono the famous "Antique Savona" decoration gained popularity, putting Albisola and Savona at the forefront of Italian production, and the famous turquoise colouring was in demand throughout Italy and Europe.
. Towards the end of the 19th century it was Nicolo' Poggi who contributed to the rebirth of majolica, first in Savona and then in Albisola. His work encouraged other artists to revert to tradition. The urn you see above is from this time period in the 1800's.
The Urn: This Antique Savona urn, in the calligraphic-naturalistic style, has scenes on both sides. One side portrays a battle scene with a coat of arms painted on the neck of the urn, while the other side portrays two men approaching a castle in a landscape style setting of large trees and mountains in the distance. The handles are tied triple stalks of leaves extending from a mascarone. The lid and pedestal have images of battle weaponry , costumes and drums. The bottom bears makers marks.

- Early 19th Century Draped Urn in Carved and Weathered MarbleLocated in Dallas, TXProduced in the 1800’s, this hand-carved and weathered marble urn sits on a circular plinth with molding. The lidded urn (stylized lid) is depicted as having a drapery covering. In antiquity, a fabric covering a vessel often symbolized the barrier between heaven and earth. - Large Antique Italian Blue and White Lidded Urn, 19th CenturyLocated in Dallas, TXThis stunning lidded urn might have once been found in a 19th century Italian apothecary. The front of the shaped urn body has the hand-painted phrase “C. Violaru”, which is the heavily abbreviated form of the Latin word for violet (violaceum). Up until the mid-1700’s, apothecaries would make syrups from violets and use it to treat kidney ailments. Above the Latin wording is a whimsical musical scene with a man blowing a horn leading a couple who is holding hands over rocky terrain lined with shrubbery. A large house and trees can be seen behind the trio with a pair of mountains in the distance. On the opposite side of the urn is a floral display with a bird perched on a rock. Beneath the bird is a geometric design, possibly a stylized sun with radiating beams of light. Both scenes are segmented by a pair of thin quarter round moldings that encircle the entire vase. Other hand-painted motifs include floral and foliate margents, geometric patterns, and Vitruvian waves that are infilled with horizontal fluting. The sides of the urn have a fish-scale background beneath two mustachioed mascarons. Both men have been styled in grotesque fashion, with a pair of spiraled horns emanating from their heads. In between the horns is a looping handle that is affixed to the body in similar tight spirals. The domed lid has three scrolled arms that merge in a geometric finial. The base color of the urn is white, with illustrations in a monochromatic cobalt oxide blue, reminiscent of Delft blue pottery...Category
