About the Item

A magnificent antique French dore bronze frame houses this stunning old portrait which is of a member of the Boucher D'Orsay family of French nobility, though we are unsure of just which of the family members she is. A beauty, she's pictured here proud of her pale peach colored veil, and it is perhaps her marriage portrait. The wearing of white wedding gowns was not a fashion until the time of Queen Victoria, remember, and yet a veil is sometimes a hint of a wedding portrait. The gown she wears and her other costumery would put this beauty in the late 1600s to early 1700s, with the belt of many gems and her choker of large pearls against a very fitted bodice and waist, full sleeves and skirt. A serene portrait, very well accomplished and signed 'Vallee', it is painted in gauche on thin natural wafer, typical of the 1800s miniatures, and it is still sealed by the vellum backing (thin leather). One can see the very slightest disruption to the paint un upper left of the background, by remember our images are greatly enlarged and you will not see this in the same way in natural viewing or in display. A minor flaw, but one we will disclose. The frame is a magnificent antique in its own right, and houses this exceptional painting beautifully.

Very good to excellent condition, the frame is superb, a high dore bronze gold patina, and fitting housing for the beautifully executed and signed miniature portrait. Protected within the original seal that braces cover glass, painting and the vellum backing all tightly together against dust or damage.
