Painted Fan, Pastoral Scenes, possiby 18th Century
About the Item
Very high quality design and painting, with subtle touches throughout. The painted scenes feature an aristocratic couple in high 18th century dress, numerous children, animals (sheep and dogs), musical instruments, floral motifs/garlands, and dainty gold sequins. Ornate applied ornamentation/filigree work on the mother-of-pearl (?) sticks is detailed and intriguing.
The interaction among the painted characters suggests the visit of an aristocratic couple to the country. We speculate that the imagery may illustrate an episode from literature.
This may be 18th century fan. Or it may be a later piece, harkening back to the Gilded Age. Both original quality and current condition are especially fine.
The fan is beautifully preserved in a gold gesso shadow-box, also in good condition, with a few small dings.

- 18th Century French Pastoral and Harbor Scene Oil Painting in Ornate Gilt FrameLocated in Dallas, TXThis monumental antique oil on canvas painting was created in France, circa 1790. Set in a carved gilt frame, the large artwork depicts a pastoral scene with the port of Marseilles in the background; it features people playing cards around a table, one lady napping with a dog beside her, another woman with her kid carrying flowers, a man courting a young beauty sitting on a bench, and horses in movement. The inscription on the rider's flag reads "Liberte de L'Escaut 1793," likely referring to the Battle of Raismes (also known as the Battle of Conde or St. Amand) which took place on 8 May 1793, during the Flanders Campaign of the Wars of the French Revolution. It was between the French Republican army and the Allied Coalition army, and resulted in an Allied Victory. A possible signature is not legible in the lower left corner of painting. The important painting is in excellent condition with lots of wonderful and interesting details, and embellished with an elegant frame! Place this huge artwork...Category
