About the Item
Rene Gruau, an Italian born artist, created this image in 1981. Gruau is one of the most collectible poster artists and his posters are becoming more and more difficult to find. He evoked the glamour and style of the world of high fashion in everything he did.
His style was both simple and dramatic. Like Toulouse-Lautrec, his style usually involved a few ink lines and blocks of color. In Gruau’s case the colors were often red and black.
Born Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli in Rimini, Italy on Feb 4, 1909, he was the son of an Italian count. His career was launched by Christian Dior after World War !! and eventually he worked for some of the major couture houses, like Balmain, Balenciaga and Givenchy. Fashion was always the focus of his work but his women always seemed to come alive. Wrote Gilles de Bure, in reference to his women ‘they float, they appear, they disappear, as if they had neither body or flesh. In the 1990s when he was already in his eighties his work was being exhibited in Germany, Japan, Monaco and France. The largest retrospective was organized by the Advertising museum in Paris in 1999 and it was appropriately called “Passionately Gruau’.
He died on March 31, 2004. He was 95
