This is a beautifully sculpted bronze elephant by Barbara Beretich. The elephant comes across as a playful with one of his front legs raised on a ball much like a circus elephant. His trunk is curled up and tusks raised. the bronze is signed on the ball and the hand applied patina is a rich blue green. Below some information on the artist: During her younger years in California, Beretich's family raised multiple animals including hogs, cows, sheep and horses, influencing her artwork. This is a unique bronze piece, not editioned, by Marchello Mascherini of a seated figure on a stool playing a guitar. One may interpret the figure as singing as his mouth is open. The figure and the guitar blend and become one in areas, creating ambiguity of definition in the piece. The patina is a deep chocolate brown. The base of the sculpture is marble and measures 3.25" X 3.25". The original tag is still present on the underside of the base, but has faded and is not completely legible. It is signed "M. Mascherini" on one of the legs of the stool. This is definitely a piece worthy of joining any art collection. Marchello Mascherini was born in Udine, Italy, in 1906. He moved to Isernia, the central-southern region of Molise, where he first began learning about sculpture in the local workshops of the area. He finished his education at the Regia Scuola d’arte and moved on to the Istituto Industriale “Alessandro Volta” in the spring of 1921 focussing on ornamental sculpture. Italian porcelain hand painted traditional urn shape lamp by Capo Di Monte. Urn shape in form, the top is accented with two handles with swirls highly decorated in light pink, gold and yellow. The lamp widens at the bottom of the handles and tapers down to a wider body. The body of this decorative lamp features scenes of robed figures of men and women at a Bacchanalian feast. Decoration includes scenes of women draped in various color robes such as pink green and yellow. Bacchus is depicted as surrounded by women and sports a dark beard and floral crown. The top includes piercing throughout. The bottom of the porcelain portion of the lamp is decorated in a pink rope pattern around the edges. Just above, figures of light mint green leaves or petals are painted with gold hand painted edges. The base of the lamp is made up of a gold or brass metal with an ornate floral pattern. Inside appears to be iron or steel. The shape of the metal base is square in form with a pinched design at each side. Original harp included, however no shade. How we would style it: A rare piece such as this Capo Di Monte deserves to be seen. It reminds us of the Venetian home of Dodie Rosekrans. Filled with timeless classical pieces, each with their own story. This lovely lamp deserves a home of a true collector who has a deep appreciation for classical Italian art.
