“The extension of the art of dwelling is the art of living” ~ Charlotte Perriand Charlotte Perriand “Les Arc” chairs Charlotte Perriand may best be known for her collaborative efforts while working at the architecture studio of famed designer Le Corbusier. The 1928 iconic tubular steel chaise, which bears his name, was collaboration between the architect, Perriand and, Le Corbusier’s cousin, Jeanneret. Perriand is a fascinating...a pioneer, an innovator, and a visionary. In an entirely male dominated field, at only 24 years old, Perriand applied for a job at the studio of Le Corbusier. She was immediately and unceremoniously turned away yet remained undeterred. She set about to convert her apartment into a studio where she deigned a rooftop bar of glass, aluminum and steel for exhibit. Her design garnered much attention and caught the eye of Le Corbusier who later gave an apology and invited her to come work at his “ atelier”. Perriand worked as a lead furniture designer for a decade the studio designing many significant pieces with Le Corbusier. After striking out on her own, Perriand was always evolving, a constant quest for new skills and challenges. She expanded her knowledge, becoming a well-respected architect and traveled the world in search of ancient skills for her very modern ascetic. In the 1960’s the French ski resort Les Arcs contracted Perriand for the design and development of their resort; emphasizing practical use of small spaces and open living without compromising quality or comfort. It is for this project that Perriand created the tubular steel and leather chairs that became know as “ les Arc” chairs…. Perriand balances the thick leather by mounting it to the tubular chrome steel frame with smaller straps. The symmetry between the leather and steel create an overall light feeling to the appearance and makes them versatile for any setting. Our set of four chairs is in excellent condition, the leather aged perfectly to enhance its natural beauty. And, like the influential designer, they become only better with age.
