Truth be told, I've held off putting this marvel up for sale, trying to wedge it into my own home. Ah, but just how many chandeliers is too many? Answer: when several of them reside in boxes on the closet floor. This Des Hanots ball chandelier is as rare as the proverbial hen's tooth. It was a near-miracle that I found it and even more extraordinary that it arrived in San Francisco in one piece; believe me, they tried to destroy it!! It's not signed, but my European spies "in the know" identify it as Des Hanots, one of the premier lighting designers/companies of the magical era of Art Deco. The canopy, chain, and ball-fitter, if you will, which are surely original to the ball, are the work of the esteemed Hettier et Vincent company; whether they bought the ball from Des Hanots or "whatever," that's the way it is, lost to history. If you're wondering about substance, just consider for a moment that the ball itself weight just over eight pounds!! That means THICK glass, which you profit from in two ways: First, it diffuses the light better, and second, it's harder for Fifi to break when she's teetering on the stool giving it her once a year feather dusting. I don't think I'm talking too far through my hat when I say that the effot involved in making a glass ball like this was considerable for the period. The metal apparatus, including the distinctive canopy, is original to the piece, and the finish solid brass, nickel which with age has the look of pewter. Just loosen the three screws that hold the shade to the metal and you can easily replace the bulb. The extra-terrestrial motif (comets' tails?) on the glass manifests the Art Deco period fascination and preoccupation with flight and outer space, frontiers that were now seen, thanks to the unending ingenuity and drive of we powerful earthlings, as imminently conquerable.
