A lavish George II style carved and gold leaf frame enclosing the original oval mirror glass from England c.1865. Please look closely at the wonderfully sensuous quality of this mirror frame with its delightfully curvaceous form. The beautiful effect created by the openwork carving of the frame was first seen during the reign of George II (1723-1760) when the glamour and opulence of gold leaf frames and reflective mirror glass was an essential aspect of a well furnished home. The skill necessary for a substantial frame that was pierced to let flow from both the front and behind the frame in order to create a three dimensional appearance was a hallmark of frame design during this period and has been recreated here in this nineteenth century example. The crest of the frame showcases an arrangement of open scrolls supporting a swag of flowers that cascade down to the horizontal shoulders of the frame. At this point the cascade of the frame continues down to the lowest point in a series of facing scrolls that are entwined with flowering branches in a continuous movement with an undulating profile. The slight variations give the frame its terrific life like quality and appeal. Even the section of the frame that encloses the original mirror glass has a decorative profile that resembles the curl of a wave as it crashes to shore. The entire surface of the mirror frame is highlighted with gold leaf that adds emphasis to every change in the profile by creating a play of light and shadow. The original mirror glass has a wonderful aspect to it that includes the customary speckles and sparkles indicative of antique glass and possessses a romantic allure.
