About the Item
René Baumer
With maternal ancestry in Ardeche region and paternal ancestry from Alsace, René Baumer, born in Lyon, spent part of his childhood during the first world war in a little hamlet in Cevennes. Early on, he showed a remarkable aptitude for drawing, but this only when he reached adulthood that his studies at the School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg, the School of Fine Arts and Academy Jullian in Paris steered him towards the teaching of drawing. The war in 1939 interrupted his career as an artist and teacher. Demobilized in 1940, he moved in with his parents in a neighborhood of Lyon and immediately joined the Resistance, where his activities were many and dangerous. Stopped by the Gestopo, imprisoned in Fort Mont Luc, then deported to the German death camps, he experienced the tragedy of Neuengamme, Stoecken and Bergen-Belsen. At the liberation of the latter camp in 1945, he had the luck to be counted among the survivors and returned to France where he found much of his family - nearly all in the Resistance – decimated.
Returning to normal life, he took up his job as teacher and, with whatever free time this permitted, he focused on his personal works, painting taking precedence over sculpture. The inspiration of the period 1950-1965 marked clear tendency towards surrealism and the clear memory of his hard times in Germany.
These are evident in the following creations:
The War
The Horseman of the Apocalypse
The Crucifixion
Toile with Abstract Design
The Deported
Spring in Bergen-Belsen
Yet more sadness in the dream of:
The End of the Day
The Musician
But, to savor the happiness of dearly acquired liberty, here are compositions expressing the enchanting beauty of nature with:
The Blessing of Spring
Young Girl with Flowers
The Enchanted Road
Also, the fantasies of:
The Imaginary Countryside
The Market of Yeux
The Cyclist
The Worker
Finally, several portraits both in terracotta and in painting.
In these last works, Rene Baumer seems to carry his interest into more abstract compositions, as demonstrated in multiple variations on the ”The Epic Poem“, ”Song of Songs“, ”The King of Aulnes“, ”Romance of the Rose“ , ”The Poet“, etc. Here, literature is only a pretext — if these titles of these works claim literary context, the harmony of tone shown exalts a joy of living. In confirmation, look at ”The Fish“, ”The Watchmaker“, ”The Sculptor“, ”The Costumed Dancers“, ”The Tragedien“ and yet more where color remains always the artist’s preoccupation. While he drew secretly in the prison camps, his work is now permanently shown in the Museum of the Order of the Liberation, at the Invalides. Awarded the medal of the Legion of Honor, Rene Baumer also awarded the Medal of the Resistance.
