About the Item

18 Karat Gold and Sterling Silver hand-pierced cuff inspired the mosaic marble panels of the Mausoleum of Sultan al-Mansur Qalawun in Cairo, set with semi- precious stones. In the Mausoleum of Sultan al-Mansur Qalawun - built in 1285 and the first dome to be erected by a sultan during his reign in the heart of Cairo - a delicate mosaic marble panel carries a dynamic and modern design. The design of the Qalawun Cuff follows this elongated design all around, and is a tribute to the Egyptian author Gamal al- Ghitani (2015-1945) who has produced seminal work on Historic Cairo and the Mamluk Era. Set with Black Onyx and Garnet, the cuff is encircled with calligraphy taken from the words of al-Ghitani, “My journey was but a search for myself. My departure was from me, in me, and to me.
