An 18ct gold and wooden stallion’s head bangle by Gay Freres c.1970s, the open by-pass style bangle fashioned from smoothly carved and polished ebony wood with one tapering end and the other set with an 18ct yellow gold stallion’s head with mane flowing, nostrils flaring, gem-set eyes and open mouth, the bangle opens by way of a central swivel mechanism which allows the bangle to twist open sideways. This is a quintessential 1970s jewel from this Swiss company which was founded in 1835 in Geneva. They made torques, cuffs and rings with favoured motifs including leopard, tiger and stallion heads like this one. As well as precious metals, which were used both with and without diamonds and gemstones, their jewels often featured organic materials such as tortoiseshell, ivory and ebony. This stylish bracelet would make a bold and striking accessory to any outfit.
