Antique Georgian Mourning Brooch in 18 Carat Gold, circa 1780

About the Item

A beautifully preserved antique Georgian Mourning brooch from the late 18th Century featuring a detailed image of an urn and coffin in the centre with the words: “In memory of” written at the front. The image is laid on a mother of pearl base and features a beautiful tree, created from a lock of hair. Mourning jewellery was often worn as a commemorative souvenir to remember a loved one, or a reminder to the living of the inevitability of death. They sometimes contained a lock of a loved one’s hair so that a piece of them was always kept close to the wearer. The image has been preserved behind a glass window and set in an ornate 18ct gold frame. It’s remained in excellent condition and is a wonderful piece of history that deserves to be treasured.
