About the Item

We are delighted to offer this superb antique Victorian 14ct gold shell cameo brooch made c.1890. The cameo depicts a bearded gentleman 'in profile' (side on) in exceptional detail and intricacy. Upon closer inspection of the beard and hair, the intricacy can be further appreciated with an almost lifelike texture in the manner of Renaissance sculptures. It is a true testament to the engraver's skill and the time that must have been spent carving such a cameo. The brooch's minimalist gold border modestly supports the outline of the cameo whilst not detracting any attention from the centrepiece portrait. The reverse side of the brooch has a pin which allows it to be worn as a brooch with shirts, jumpers, jackets or coats. Overall a wonderful example of a finely engraved and detailed shell cameo brooch and a wonderful collectable piece of 19th-century antique jewellery, rich with history and style. Not only would this piece make for an excellent collectable/display piece but also is a versatile piece of Victorian jewellery that can be worn both in the summer and winter. Certainly impressionable and distinguished, this piece would be a wonderful conversation starter and the perfect way to share your passion for history and antiques. The gold mount is unmarked as is common with many articles of this period. As such, we have tested it for 14ct gold.
