Australian Indicolite Tourmaline & Seed Pearl Bar Brooch Circa 1910

About the Item

Australian made bar brooch featuring an indicolite tourmaline with floral scrolls set with half seed pearls. Stamped with makers mark, Duggin Shappere of Melbourne. This is the first time we have observed an Indicolite tourmaline in an early Australian piece. Gemstone: One oval/cushion cut Indicolite Tourmaline (9.61mm x 6.78mm x 4.86mm), fine blue with green overtones, light facet wear consistent with age , estimated weight 2.10ct Gemstone: Natural half seed pearls Metal: 15k yellow gold Weight: 5.79 grams Measurement: Length 5cm, Width 2cm Era: Edwardian Circa 1910 Duggin Shappere & Co was an important Australian jewellery house established in Melbourne from 1896-1932. Founded by Harry Duggin and Percy Shappere the business became well known for its high quality jewellery, which was often set with Australian gemstones such as opals and diamonds. Their designs made considerable use of seed pearls and they were renowned for their signature brooches and pendants. Harry Duggin produced many distinctive Australiana designs including the “O’possum” and Kookaburra”. The Duggin and Shappere’s mark, an ‘Anchor’, was used in conjunction with the guarantee marks of the Manufacturing Jeweller’s Association Victoria.

    An exceptional, fine and impressive Austro-Hungarian seed pearl and 15 karat yellow gold bird brooch; part of our diverse antique jewellery and estate jewelry collections This exceptional, fine and impressive bird brooch has been crafted in 15k yellow gold. The 1890s bar style brooch is accented with a total of nine seed pearls incorporated within blosson designs to the naturalistic branch. The brooch is ornamented to either end with a yellow gold bird featuring a textured finish replicating the details of the plummage. The brooch secures with a hinged pin and push-pull/trombone safety catch. This antique brooch is hallmarked to the underside of the bar with a maker's mark (GN) and the Austro-Hungarian fox head mark (A, Vienna / 4, 580 standard). The brooch has been tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as 15k gold. This impressive brooch is supplied with an independent gemstone grading report card.
