Bernice Goodspeed Silver Taxco Mexico Mid-Century Silver & Black Ribbon Brooch

About the Item

This booch is a stunning piece of jewelry that embodies the craftsmanship and elegance of a Taxco master silversmith. This vintage brooch is a wearable work of art, created by the talented silversmith Bernice Goodspeed, whose works rarely surface. Bernice Goodspeed moved to Mexico in 1930 to attend the University of Mexico and study pre-Columbian art. Shortly after, she opened a shop in Mexico City. In the mid-30s she met her artist husband, Carl Pappe, and together they moved to Taxco to open a shop that sold her silver work and his paintings. She was fascinated by the Aztec and Mayan archeological discoveries of the time and would often incorporate scrolls or design elements from ancient wall paintings into her designs. Bernice passed in 1971. Crafted from sterling silver, the brooch design was likely inspired by a pre-Columbian motif, but still feels fresh and current today. Polished silver runs parallel to a channel of blackened silver. The sweeping design of a ribbon adds a touch of femininity and grace to the piece. The flowing lines and meticulous attention to detail demonstrate the artistry and precision that went into its creation. This vintage brooch is a testament to the legacy of Bernice Goodspeed and Taxco silver. Its sterling silver composition ensures both durability and timeless beauty. Whether worn as a statement piece on a lapel or adorning a scarf, this brooch is sure to draw attention and admiration for its exquisite design. Brooch measures 2.1" long by 1.3" wide. Total weight 17.6 grams. Fully hallmarked with Bernice's "B" surrounded by Taxco Mexico; Sterling 925; Eagle 3.
