Edwardian Ruby and Diamond Crescent Brooch

About the Item

Here we we have a classic crescent brooch dating back to the Edwardian era. This antique piece has been crafted from 18ct yellow gold into the shape of a moon crescent which plays host to a single row of alternating rubies and diamonds. The rubies are excellently matched in terms of their rich vivid red colour tone whereas the bright white colour of the old cut diamonds provides the perfect contrast. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Throughout the 19th century, British astronomers made many advances, building on the enormous base of precise observations provided to them by their predecessors in the 1700s. Using the new technique of spectroscopy, they worked to determine the composition of heavenly bodies, while breakthroughs in understanding the geology of the earth -many made by passionate amateur scientists as diverse as surveyors and Anglican clergy - helped them discover the facts about the nature of the moon and newly discovered planets.
