Essex Crystal Polo Horse 14 Carat Gold Pin Brooch, created around 1900.
Essex Crystal depicting a Polo game. A brooch has a horseshoe shape. Superb detail of the movement. The player is frozen in a moment of action.
Reverse carved crystal was a technique created by cutting a piece of rock quartz crystal into a convex form, and then polishing it into a cabochon shape. An image is carved into the flat side of the crystal and then hand-painted. From the front, the picture appears to be almost three-dimensional. It depicts a Horse Polo game rider with the polo stick.
Adopted by the British Nobility as a sport, Polo riding horses became a sign of status and social standing.
I have similar earrings that may be a superb set together.
An absolutely fine item for collection and as a sophisticated present.
