Margaret De Patta Abstract Sterling Brooch Mid-century Modern Free Form

About the Item

This abstract sterling brooch dates to the early 1940s when Margaret De Patta attended the Institute of Design in Chicago. This piece was bought from her by a fellow student at the Institute. It is a fine example of her work in the mid-century modern style. The brooch has a sculptural quality and great visual depth. It makes excellent use positive and negative space. The blackened, concave disk has a light texture punched in the surface. The free-form shape in polished silver floats offset above the disk on a post and casts a shadow on the background which heightens the 3-D effect. There is also a silver dot accent in the black field that is a little post with only the tip polished, so it really jumps off the dark background. Please contact us if you have any questions.
