A very rare example of the British jewelry. Fine craftsmanship, very delicate work on Jet with tiny pearl seeds being arranged as a braid. Jet is a gemstone. Unlike many gemstones, jet is not a mineral. It is derived from wood that has changed under extreme pressure. Jet is either black or dark brown. The adjective "jet-black", meaning as dark a black as possible, derives from this material. It was extremely popular during the rign of the Queen Victoria. Stamped on the back: MD Once it was common to communicate a message via pin or brooch. Nowadays this art is lost, but we can surely start a new tradition. Former secretary of state Madeleine Albright published a fascinating book “Read My Pins” - a story and celebration of how one woman’s jewelry collection was used to make diplomatic history.
