Retro 14kt Reverse Carved Essex Crystal Fox Hunt Pin

About the Item

Reverse carved crystal was a technique created by cutting pieces of rock quartz crystal into a convex form and then polishing it into a cabochon shape. An image is carved into the flat side of the crystal and then hand painted. From the front, the image appears to be almost three dimensional. Many different images were used in reverse carved crystal jewelry and artwork, but animals were some of the most common motifs. This reverse carved crystal pin from the Retro (ca1940's) era is a wonderful example of the craft! The carved Essex crystal cabochon rests on a lovely iridescent Mother of Pearl backing set within a 14kt yellow gold bezel frame. The detailed hand painted image is incredibly realistic, portraying a lifelike fox hunt scene. The scene shows three equestrian riders jumping the fence after their accompanying three hounds. Surrounding the outside of the oval frame is a very delicate twisted gold wire border, a lovely finishing touch. The reverse side of the piece has a smooth gold back and bar pin clasp and a mark for gold content, "14k". A very unique and artistic piece, it is perfect for any equestrian lover or collector of reverse carved Essex crystal! Measurements: The pin measures approximately 1 1/2" long, 1 1/4" wide, and is just over 1/4" thick. Condition: The overall condition of the pin is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the reverse carved crystal. The pin clasp is secure and in good condition.
