Victorian Diamond, Emerald and Pearl Caduceus Brooch
About the Item
A Victorian diamond, emerald and pearl caduceus brooch, the staff set with ten faceted emeralds estimated to weigh a total of 0.8 carats mounted in 18ct yellow gold, terminating to a round pearl on each end, the entwined serpents and the wings encrusted with old European-cut diamonds estimated to weigh 5.5 carats, mounted in silver to a 18ct yellow gold back, with gold brooch fitting in 9ct yellow gold, circa 1870, measuring approximately 5.5 x 6.4 cm, gross weight 16.6 grams.
This antique brooch is in very good condition for its age. Unmarked, tested as silver with 18ct gold back, with 9ct gold pin.
A wonderful Victorian brooch in the form of a Caduceus from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales. Taking inspiration from Greek mythology, this is a stylish and elegant depiction of the staff of Hermes. The eye is drawn to the central rod of brilliant emerald, around which diamond serpents coil, their heads meeting glistening outstretched diamond wings.
