Large Niello Oval Cufflinks, circa 1890

About the Item

We love the pleasing niello design of the dotted squares on these substantial cufflinks. The word "niello" is a derivation of the Latin word for "niger" meaning black. Niello was an ancient silver decorative technique revived by a German jeweler in Paris in the early part of the nineteenth century. It is accomplished by engraving the design on the silver and filling the recesses with an alloy of lead, copper, sulphur, and silver. The artistry of Niello-work is such that it embodies pleasing geometric (and sometimes floral) designs that are as modern today as when they were created in the nineteenth century. We love the way these substantial cufflinks cover the entire sleeve hole and fit snuggly on the sleeve. We have photographed the cufflink on the sleeve so you can see how well and easily it fits the four layers of cloth on a French cuff. The cufflinks are 1 ½ inches wide and just over an inch tall.
