About the Item

Founded in the 19th Century, the house of Zolotas is among the world's most esteemed jewelers, with a particular specialty in the revival of ancient Greek designs and techniques. These cufflinks are a rare and wonderful example. Rendered in 18K gold and silver with green gemstone details and weighing a massive 35.5 grams, they evoke the strength and nobility of the ram, an important motif in ancient Greek mythology as well as in ancient Greek jewelry. The cufflink faces measure 20.2mm by 25.1mm. They are secured by toggle backs. Both cufflinks are signed ZOLOTAS as well as 750 (indicating 18K gold), 950 (indicating high-purity silver) and the maker's mark. Every part of these cufflinks has been designed and made with the utmost care. As a testament to the integrity of the workmanship and design, even the "invisible" parts of the cufflinks - the connectors - are rendered in solid 18K gold. Hailing from the 1960s, when Elizabeth Taylor, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Maria Callas, and other luminaries regularly wore Zolotas jewels, these cufflinks have been well cared-for and come with their original, fitted case. A word about the gemstones: We are not gemologists, and wish to point out that the stones in these cufflinks have been drilled. (See photo under magnification.) We speculate that this may have been an original feature - that a customer may have brought beads from a necklace or other jewel with sentimental value to Zolotas and requested that they be re-set in cufflinks. We cannot know for certain, but can attest that the gemstones sit firmly in their settings.
