Carved Amethyst Teardrop Earrings in 18 Karat Gold with Diamond Accents
About the Item
Eytan Brandes bought a trio of carved amethysts (cut for earrings and a pendant) at a trade show several years ago. Originally, he intended them as a matched set with a lot of diamonds, but he never got around to it and eventually put the project aside. Coming across the stones earlier this year, he decided he didn't want to create a matching set, opting instead for something more casual (although "casual" is relative when you're talking about a 30 carat amethyst hanging from your ear). So for the earrings, he wrapped the stones in thick, textured 18 karat gold and topped them with freeform discs set with nice bright diamonds. Bonkers!
These earrings are relatively heavy, so we paired them with oversized butterfly backs (in 14 karat gold); an employee, who might be the person writing this description, was tasked with wearing them for six hours and can attest: they stay in place and aren't uncomfortable. In fact, they have the "tiara effect:" they make you feel like donning something outlandish and making an entrance someplace fabulous. Preferably with a long cigarette holder. Even though you don't smoke. So much for casual!
Each 30 carat amethyst is natural, untreated, and cut into a pear shape with a top surface carved to resemble, in this writer's opinion, a topographical map of a volcanic island.
The diamonds are straightforward bright boys, brilliant cut and 0.07 carats each. Eytan rates them G-H color and VS1-2 clarity.
The total length of each earring is 47.5mm (that's almost two inches!); note for comparison purposes that our creepy disembodied ear mannequin is life-sized.
They weigh 19.6 grams and the backs (in 14K) weigh just under one gram.
