1870s Egyptian Revival Micro Mosaic Gold Ear Pendants

About the Item

Egyptian Revival micro-mosaic ear pendants. A matching pair, each issuing from a roundel with fine ropework borders containing a raised micro-mosaic plaque depicting a heron against a blue ground, suspending a drop shape pendant and leading to a larger roundel with scalloped wirework and ropework borders enclosing a raised micro-mosaic plaque portraying a pharaoh set against a blue background, with secure hook fitting to reverse, approximately 5.95cm to top of hook. Marked yellow gold, French, circa 1870, accompanied by a fitted box. Micro-mosaic jewellery was particularly popular during the nineteenth century, when it was produced by workshops in Rome to appeal to tourists visiting the capital on the Grand Tour. In the 1860s and 70s, Ancient Egypt served as a source of inspiration, resulting in brightly coloured pieces incorporating easily identifiable symbols, such as scarab beetles and pharaoh's heads. Please note shipping to the United States of America requires the purchaser to fill out a CBP 5106 customs form before the item is shipped. This form is a legal requirement for any item over $2,000 which is being imported into the United States. One of the details the form requests is the purchaser’s social security number or importer’s number.

These fantastic pair has been crafted around the 1870 in the fashion style of the Egyptian Revival in solid yellow gold of 18 karats and embellishments of colorful enamels; such blue, white, turquoise and red. These earrings were designed in the shape of a crowned pharaoh with nemes headdresses and column from the hypostyle saloon, they are fitted on top with French hooks for pierced ears. The initial Egyptian Revival period flourished from the 1820s onward, and was inspired by ancient Egyptian imagery, such as the scarab beetle, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics. Pieces made by Carl Bacher from this period and style are extremely rare, museum pieces and highly collectable. Nemes This were pieces of striped head cloth worn by pharaohs in ancient Egypt. It was sometimes combined with the double crown, as it is on the statues of Ramesses II at Abu Simbel. The earliest depiction of the nemes, along with a uraeus, is the ivory label of Den from the 1st Dynasty...
