About the Item

Burma ruby, or Burmese ruby, is the finest sort of gem-quality rubies that you can find anywhere in the world1 . They contain the purest shade of red, otherwise known as “pigeon blood” or “blood-red”1 . Burma ruby came from the Mogok Valley in Upper Myanmar, where there’s a mine that produced 90% of the rubies in the world1. The Mogok Valley is also commonly known as “the Valley of Rubies”1. The history of Burma ruby can be directly tied to the political history of Myanmar. Until the 19th century, only the Burmese people had access to these opulent mines. When Britain annexed Upper Burma at the end of the 19th century, the British were also able to take control of the ruby mines1. Due to recent political issues, Burma ruby trade was not allowed in the United States until 20161. The Burmese mines have been depleted, as gemological experts believe that the majority of ruby deposits are all mined out1. Since the 1990s, the Mong Hsu area in central Myanmar has been the new primary source of rubies1. However, these rubies are not as fine as the old Burma rubies and often go through heat treatment to improve their color and clarity1 . Burma ruby is one of the most expensive types of color gemstones on the market. The prices of pure Burma rubies can rival those of high-quality diamonds of the same carat1. A natural Burma ruby is much more valuable than a treated one. It is thus advisable to buy Burma ruby certified by recognized national or international laboratories.
