Parnell Family Motto 'te digna sequere' on 12KGold Fob of Devil Playing Violin
About the Item
Rare and unusual Victorian 12K gold fob of the devil playing a violin. The fob is set with a carnelian embossed with a Borgase Family Crest and the Parnell Family Motto "te digna sequare" meaning "follow worthy things". Usually this Coat of Arms is accompanied by a wolf passant with an arrow struck in the shoulder or held in the mouth. Here, it is shown with the devil playing a violin astride the wolf passant.
The devil's association with the violin has to do with his predilection for "wine, women, and song". Because violins are lightweight and portable, stringed instruments could rile up a crowd in song and gaiety any time, any where, in the most primitive of places (barnyards, the streets, the public square, etc.) From a Christian perspective, wine leads to dancing which potentially leads to any number of sins. From a more simplistic perspective, folklore has it that the devil plays the violin for no other reason then the violin makes us want to dance.
Wonderful to wear on a chain or add to a bracelet. The fob measures 1 1/4" high by 5/8" wide by 1/2" deep.
