A stunning, fine and impressive, antique early 19th century 18 karat yellow gold muff chain; part of our diverse antique Georgian jewelry collections.
This exceptional, fine and impressive antique muff chain has been crafted in 18k yellow gold.
The 47' antique chain consists of twenty-seven finely crafted elongated cuboid links, embellished with impressive engraved decoration.
Each feature link articulates via a fancy array of circular links, creating an interlacing design.
The chain secures with an impressive and original diminutive hand clasp, ornamented with a 0.01ct round faceted ruby to the ring on the index finger; the addition of the gemstone is a fine feature of the piece and indicates the high quality.
By virtue of its length this muff chain in gold may be worn as a one or two strand necklace.
This exceptional Georgian gold chain necklace has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as 18 karat gold.
This exceptional chain is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire.
NOTE: Muff chains are long chains which were popularized in the 18th century, worn around the neck to secure ladies' muffs. A muff is a cylindrical piece of fur, or other warm material, used to keep hands warm in winter.

This chain has three barrel clasps and can also be worn as a shorter necklace and two bracelets or one bracelet and a medium length chain, circa 1820. This style of Georgian or Regency chain was at its height of popularity between 1800 and 1840. The Napoleonic wars had lead to a scarcity of gold, therefore jewellers designed pieces that had as much impact as possible, whilst utilising smaller quantities of gold. The chains are hand made, with the patterns being produced by stamping thin gold sheet, which were then curved lengthways and soldered together to form oval or round belcher links. From 1848 onwards more gold deposits were discovered, this lead to increases in weight of chains and had a strong influence on jewellery design in the Victorian period.
