Arts and Crafts Style Cabochon Moonstone 14K Rose Gold Silver Riviere Necklace
About the Item
Stunning Arts and Crafts style cabochon moonstone, 14K rose gold and silver riviere necklace composed of 35 circular cabochon moonstones set in a finely detailed silver and 14K gold setting. Each of the moonstones is set with eight fleur de lis motif reticulated prongs which allow light in to enhance the ethereal quality of the gems. 14K Rose gold had been thoughtfully used to complement the slightly rosy luminescent hue of the moonstones.
Provenance: from the collection of a noted New York City psychiatrist and collector of unusual, often one-of-a-kind jewels.
Moonstone was a favorite among jewelry designers of the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau eras including Louis Comfort Tiffany, Rene Lalique, Georg Jensen, the Kalo Shop, Archibald Knox and numerous others. According to Hindu mythology, the gem was thought to have been made of solidified moonbeams, having the visual effect of a full moon shining through diaphonous clouds. This natural phenomena is known as adularescence. Adularescent moonstone is connected to Mt. Adular ( now St. Gotthard), a city in Switzerland which was one of the first sources of gem quality moonstone.
