Victorian Carved Natural Coral and Persian Turquoise Festoon Cherub Necklace

About the Item

A rare and stunning coral and turquoise necklace from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This 14kt yellow gold piece features gorgeous hand-carved coral links that form a chain, with 5 links dangling from the center in a festoon-style fashion. The 3-dimensional coral links vary slightly in size, and each one displays a unique hand-carved scene that wraps around the entire outer surface. The raised scenes depict lovely cherubs playfully engaging with each other or with animals, such as lions or sheep. A gold cap with an engraved wheat motif rests on either end of the links, pairing perfectly with the coral's rich, salmon orange hues. Separating the coral links is a round link lined with incredible Persian turquoise stones, and beautiful beadwork on the edges provides a lovely feminine touch. The hanging festoon links display similar cherub scenes, and are finished with a matching gold and turquoise cap at the base, featuring a delicate bead at the center. The combination of the turquoise, coral, and gold creates a fabulous and colorful statement when worn! Hidden within the final coral link at the back is a push clasp that securely fastens the piece together. The necklace drapes beautifully at the neckline, and would make a gorgeous and unique addition to any collection! The necklace measures approximately 16.25" long. Each festoon link hangs about 1" long, and is a little under 1/2" in diameter. The largest coral links measures a little more than 3/4" long, and are 3/8" in diameter. The smallest links measure a little less than 5/8" long and are 3/8" in diameter. The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the coral links, which are free of chips or scratches. All of the coral links and turquoise stones are intact and securely set. The push clasp is secure and in good working condition. There is a natural darkened patina to some of the gold surface, which is common given the age of the piece, and adds to its beauty and character.
