Measurements: Green Beryl Gemstone: 1.02 inches (2.6 cm) Large Pearl Diameter: 0.62 inch (1.6 cm) Small Pearl Diameter: 0.39 inch (1 cm) Height Drop: 1.10 inches (2.8 cm) Wearable Length: 17.91 inches (45.5 cm) A sumptuous assemblage of lustrous, oversized, baroque pearls with a magnificent and weighty gemstone at the clasp. Hardware is 18K Gold. Nicolas Varney kindly wrote us with the following explanation: "[It] was an early piece. It's one of 2. That clasp would probably be green beryl, if I remember correctly. It's a piece that I enjoyed making. It took me further in a direction I liked." Green beryl is a pale form of the noble precious stone, the emerald. ______________________________________________________________________ Nicolas Varney's credo could not be more simple or direct: "Jewelry is one of the most expressive ornaments that a woman can wear" With a philosophy that goes directly to the heart of his discipline and a crystal-clear vision, Varney is widely recognized today as one of fashion's most eloquent creators. A graduate of the Gemological Institute of America in Vicenza, Italy, Varney opened a studio in New York. Carleton Varney, his father, was a renowned interior designer and owner of Dorothy Draper. His mother, Suzanne, was founder of the textile firm, Carleton V. As a child, surrounded by artists and accompanying his parents on their extensive travels, his eyes were opened to the beauty of natural terrains and exotic cultures. Profiting from his privileged education and through an ingenious combination of precious metals, pearls, cork, eggshell, coral, wood essences and rare gemstones, Varney's strikingly original jewelry is a product of broad experience and vast visual resources. The list of Varney's accomplishments and accolades is long and impressive. He has been a member of CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) since 2006. He was the featured designer for the opening of the Gem and Mineral exhibit at the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh. Forbes named Varney one of “Five Jewelers Working Today That You Will Be Collecting Tomorrow”. He has been featured in various publications including Veranda, Town and Country, Vogue, Departures and W magazine. He was the only American jewelry designer to be included in the book “21st Century Jewelry Designers: An Inspired Style” by Juliet Weir de la Rochefoucauld and most recently was spotlighted in the book “Jeweler: Masters, Mavericks and Visionaries of Modern Design,” by SteIlene Volandes.
