C1880 Chi Rho Micro-mosaic Christogram Pendant

About the Item

The Chi-Rho symbol, one of the earliest forms of the Christogram or monogram of Christ, dates to the early days of Christianity. It is formed by superimposing 2 Greek letters, chi (X) and rho (P), which are the first two letters of the Greek word "Christos", the anointed one. The Greek spelling is Χριστῷ. The Chi Rho as a symbol of Christ was frequently used in the Fourth Century AD during the reign of Roman Emperor Constantine.. While meaningful as a symbol of Christianity, the Chi Rho is particularly relevant to Catholicism. No longer a symbol only revealed secretly, today we see the symbol in architecture, literature, and iconography. The micromosaics form a blue sky, flowers and a center dove. It was probably made by Italian artisans and exported to London for mounting. The pendant, backed in silver, is 2 inches long and the bale adds an additional ½ inch. The pendant is shown with our Venetian box link long watchchain LU25112862012 and a short 15" silver Albert chain, also available on First Dibs.
