14K Gold Filigree Pomander Perfume Vinaigrette Pendant
About the Item
This filigree pomander pendant is crafted in 14 karat yellow gold. The lovely vinaigrette pomander is round-shaped and has an openwork design of fine filigree work. This filigree globule has a screw fitting - by unscrewing the top and bottom can be separated of each other.
Pomanders were generally of gold or silver, often set with jewels, and were pierced to diffuse the scent of the precious solid perfume or aromatic insides. Unlike liquid perfumes that were often valued for their erotic properties, the substances in pomanders were valued more for their medicinal and protective powers against plague and other diseases. Pomanders were generally spherical in shape, often shaped like fruit, and were usually suspended from a chain worn as jewelry.
The pomander is in very good condition. The top and bottom deviate slightly from each other when fastened. Marked, gold hallmark between 1906 and 1953. We presume the pendant is older than the hallmarks suggests and was marked in a later period.
The size of the pomander is Ø 1.8 - 2 centimeters and length 2.5 centimeters including bail. It has a nice heavy weight of 5.3 grams.
