Ancient Greek 5th Century BC Nike Coin 18k Gold Pendant
About the Item
A beautiful Image of the Greek Goddess Nike is featured on this rare coin from Terina, an ancient Greek colony on the top side of the "toe" of the "boot" of what is now Southern Italy. This silver stater coin from 425-400 BC shows Nike standing on a rock holding a kerykeion. The kerykeion, or caduceus, was the staff carried by Hermes in Greek mythology. The same staff, which was also borne by heralds in general, is entwined by two serpents, sometimes surmounted by wings. Nike was the Greek Goddess of victory, flying around awarding the victors on the battlefield. She was believed to be able to grant humans with the speed and strength to be able to be victorious in any task they undertook. The coin is beautifully highlighted set into a doubled bezel hand hammered setting. It comes with a laminated coin certificate of authenticity. The handmade chain shown is not included but can be purchased additionally.
