About the Item

I'm delighted to offer this very special pendant by the talented & well-known American jewelry artist Carolyn Morris Bach. Dating to 1997 (signed and dated on the reverse of the piece), the pendant is sizable and so striking, with many of Carolyn's signature elements: a carved moon face, bezel set moonstones and carved animals - in this case 4 charming dog's heads. I've spoken to the artist and she told me she named this pendant "Moon Dogs" and that it was a favorite of hers from that period. (Carolyn's work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC, as well as being shown in galleries all over, and featured regularly in specialist magazines and the like.) Finely crafted of 18K yellow gold and sterling silver (both with lovely patina), the pendant measures approximately 1 3/4 inches high x 1 13/16 inches (44.5 x 46.5 mm) and has a hidden bail on the back. (please note that the pendant does not come with a chain, though I've used one to show you how it looks suspended on my gold chain) The finished weight on my scale is 11.56 grams. It looks great worn with either a gold or silver chain and would also look lovely on a leather or silk cord. Four glowing round moonstone cabochons are each approximately 6 mm in diameter, not including their substantial gold bezels. In closed back settings, the moonstones have a very cats-eye effect in some lighting conditions and an overall silvery glow in others; they remain in very good condition. Between each moonstone is a hand carved dog's head made of bone, with a small silver rivet as its eye. These sweet, stylized pups also remain in fine condition, with a pleasing warm color and a glossy finish. At the center, set in a closed back silver bezel, is an oval shaped moon face in cow bone, with one of Carolyn's very distinctive and almost talismanic carvings. It, too, remains in good condition. The back is signed by the artist and dated, and also marked for 18K gold and sterling silver. The original bail is present and quite large, so it will accommodate many styles and widths of chain or cord. In overall wonderful condition, there is beautiful patina present that I have not removed. It could be polished up if you like, but the patina is so nice and authentic, I rather think you may wish to see it in person before deciding if you want to clean and polish it to look all bright and shiny and new. I think the patina works so well in this piece.
