"Curly the Frog" Necklace in 18 Karat Gold with Ruby Eyes and Moonstone Chain
About the Item
This unique (literally -- there's only one) new necklace from Eytan Brandes combines a vintage frog brooch, converted to a pendant, with a strand of peach moonstone beads and "petal" hardware. All metal is rich, vivid 18 karat yellow gold.
The frog, probably dating from the 1960's or 1970's, is a beautifully made figural piece with a sweet face and dark pink ruby eyes. The rubies are Russian-set and probably weigh no more than 0.10 carats each. They're fairly clean and slightly mismatched in color, which is actually a good sign since it suggests they aren't heavily treated, but both are intensely pink. Our favorite characteristic of this frog is the way the spots on his back resemble curlicues -- probably not the original intention, but we think it's cuter than cute!
The beads are peach moonstone rondelles - smooth but not faceted or uniform - that feel great against the skin. The beads terminate at each end with an 18 karat gold petal cap/hook combo; Eytan made these caps specifically for Mr. Curly. In the front of the necklace, the hook is soldered shut to hold the pendant. At the ends, the hooks are left open to form the hook-and-hook closure.
All together, this necklace is 16.5" long. The frog is 28mm x 28mm, and the beads are 4mm.
The necklace weighs 29 grams and the gold weight is just under 19 grams.
