About the Item

Each element features malachite, black onyx and mother-of-pearl inlaid in yellow gold to create a beautiful pattern. The organic looking pattern and a sculptural shape are signature for Ippolita’s aesthetics. The gemstones and mother-of-pearl are polished and look amazingly silky and glossy. The enlarged size pendant hanging on the delicate chain creates an impressive feel of a massive piece hovering in the air. The pendant and the chain are made of 18 karat yellow gold. The pendant is inlaid with malachite, black onyx and mother-of-pearl. The pendant measures 4" x 2 ¾” (10 x 7.2 cm) without the bail. The chain measures 26" x 1/16" ( 65 x 0.2 cm). The necklace weighs 70.1 grams. Both, the pendant and the chain, are stamped with Ippolita maker's mark, hallmark for 18 karat gold. About Ippolita Brand: Established in 1999 in New York, is a jewelry brand that reached a perfect balance between art and craftsmanship. The brand was founded by an Italian designer Ippolita Rostagno. After graduated from the Istituto d’Arte in Florence where she studied sculpture, Ippolita wanted to implement her “love of sculpture into a form of wearable art.” Today jewelry by Ippolita is made by hands and celebrates women of all ages. Since the designer added precious and semi-precious colored stones to her vocabulary, they became a cornerstone of the brand’s aesthetics. Mother-of-pearl, turquoise, malachite, rock crystal embodying Rostagno's love of nature, sculpture, and raw materials. Ippolita pieces are made for everyday wearing, however they are meticulously made. Here is where Italian heritage plays its part. Amazing hammered metal textures and curvy organic shapes are crafted by using modern technologies and traditions of old craftsmanship. About Italian jewelry: Italian Jewelry History Italian jewelry style is deeply rooted in the history of the region. The beginning of it can be marked as far as 700 BC. What we consider today as the Italian style was impacted by the ancient Greek, Roman and Etruscan cultures. Italian jewelry of all time is mostly made of yellow gold. This metal has been favored the most by the Italian makers. In the Etruscan region goldsmiths developed such processes as alloying and engraving, also the granulation method got perfected and became a signature. In the later Middle Ages, the most sought-after jewelry pieces came from Vicenza and Florence. During the Renaissance era, the art of jewelry making was as important as painting and architecture. Later, in the Baroque era, jewelry design shifted from bold and straightforward pieces to intricate and more detailed. Today Italian jewelry style and look depends on a certain maker. However, “made in Italy” jewelry always relates to luxurious lifestyle, timeless design, and exquisite manufacturing. Italian Chains In Italy chain production started somewhere back to the ancient times, as braided chains were found in Ur and Uppsala at the archaeological sites. They were crafted by using knitting technique and were precursors of the modern link chains. Thanks to Italian makers, we have Figaro, Anchor and Spiga links today. Those links could be a result of reinvented and reimagined Catholic rosaries. In our time Italian gold chains are well-known for its durability and great design. One of the Italian makers, UnoAErre, gave 18k gold Italian chains a worldwide fame in the 1980s. Gucci became a synonym of anchor chains. Tubogas design invented by Bulgari is iconic and used by many designers not only in chains but for making gold tubogas bracelets, earrings and rings. Italian Makers There are so many great jewelry brands came from Italy, it’s really challenging to mention just a few. Vhernier, Roberto Coin, and of course, Bulgari could be the first who come to mind when we think of the Italian makers. We also should mention Carlo Weingrill, a jewelry house from Verona. Their high-quality pieces have been sought after in the last few decades. The house has been family owned by four generations of jewelers. Passing family traditions of workmanship is another staple of Italian jewelry making. Italian cultural heritage, high-skilled makers and great quality materials keep the never-ending popularity of Italian jewelry going.

History of Insect Jewelry: Insect jewelry carries a diverse symbolism and has deep historic roots. To us, these pieces serve as a reminder of the delicate beauty that designers found in nature. Scarab Beetles In ancient Egypt, scarab beetles were associated with the Sun God Ra. They symbolized regeneration and protection. Scarabs were often used in amulets, and seals to bring good luck and ward off evil. Bees and Butterflies Bees were revered in ancient Greece and Rome and seen as symbols of diligence and cooperation. Honey, a product of bees, was also associated with sweetness and fertility. Butterflies, with their transformation from caterpillar to butterfly, were seen as symbols of metamorphosis and the soul's journey. Insect Jewelry Resurgence In the 19th century, during the Victorian era, there was a resurgence of interest in nature-inspired jewelry. It often incorporated real insect specimens preserved in resin. This trend was influenced by the Victorian fascination with the natural world and scientific discoveries of the time. The Art Nouveau movement of the late 19th - early 20th centuries embraced organic forms and drew inspiration from nature. Insect motifs, such as dragonflies, butterflies, and beetles, were prominent in Art Nouveau jewelry. These pieces featured flowing lines and delicate designs. Today, insect jewelry continues to be equally loved by designers and jewelry buyers. For example, dragonflies are often associated with change and self-realization, while butterfly brooches symbolize transformation and beauty. Bees are still seen as symbols of hard work, community, and productivity. About Victorian Jewelry: Victorian jewelry is dated from 1837 to 1901. The era’s name was inherited from Queen Victoria who reigned during that time. Her significant input shaped the jewelry style of that time. To navigate in such a vast period, historians divide it into following parts: • The Early Victorian or Romantic • The Middle of Grand Victorian • The Late or Aesthetic Victorian Era Different materials, gemstones and techniques were popular specifically for each era. Some styles though remained in favor longer than during just one period. For instance, hair jewelry made its way from the Romantic to the Grand period. Snake and animal motifs were also in demand throughout the era. Early Victorian Jewelry As to the Queen influence, Romantic Period jewelry had well pronounced sentimental vibes. It was the time when young Queen Victoria was in love with her husband, Prince Albert. And the whole nation admired their relationship. Cameos, matching brooches, miniature portraits and lockets reflected the likeness of loved ones. After Albert’s passing in 1861, the Early Victorian Period ended, and The Grand era began. Grand Victorian Jewelry After the incandescent bulb invention in 1870s, diamond jewelry started thriving like never before. Diamonds, being placed under the electric light, revealed their dazzling nature and looked truly fascinating. Besides Victorian diamond jewelry...
