Large and Exceptional Navajo Kingman Turquoise Bolo

About the Item

Exceptionally large Native American Navajo Indian Kingman turquoise and sterling silver bolo by Avin Joe. This piece is a show stopper! 1 inch thick, 6 inches long, 4 inches wide and a whopping 980 carat stone. Premium grade A natural, untreated turquoise slab surrounded by classic Navajo twisted rope border with bead design. Stamped "Sterling" with maker initials "AJ" on back. Frame or wear! Avin Joe, master Navajo silversmith born and raised on the Navajo Reservation, learned the trade through his father Phillip Joe who was taught by his uncle Kenneth Begay. Avin learned the basics through observation and developed his skills by taking silversmithing classes ag Ganado High School. During the next several years, Avin worked with various metals to learn their properties, reaction to heat, stamping, etc. and since the mid 1990s has worked almost exclusively in silver, perfecting his skills, to become a master silversmith, building top quality pieces featured in the finest galleries, museums and collections around the world.     Navajo large turquoise slab bracelet. The turquoise is from the Kingman Mine in Arizona. This bracelet has an exceptionally beautiful sky blue stone (over 2") with twisted rope and bead border. Nice patina! This bracelet came from Arizona (Kingman Mine), we purchased in 2010. It was made by a Navajo silversmith during the period before they marked their work (most probably around 1960-70s). It not enhanced, it is a 100% untreated natural turquoise stone. It was first mined by the Native Americans many years before Europeans came to America. Probably at least 1,000 years ago. Much later a number of individuals and companies owned and used the mine. The Kingman Mine is located in an area called Mineral Park in Arizona. It was discovered by James Haas in the late 1800’s.
