Reinhold Reiling Modernist Emerald Sapphire Tourmaline Quartz Pearl Gold Necklace 18k yellow gold, various precious stones (emerald, quartz, sapphire, tourmaline), pearls Length of pendant 15.3 cm (approx. 6"), width 3.1 cm (approx. 1 1/4") Length of chain 45.2 cm (approx. 17 3/4") Marks: maker's mark; gold content mark ‘750’ for 18k gold Germany, 1960s The necklace, an early piece from the first half of the 1960s, displays as a centerpiece a pendant of 15 cm length, composed of interlinking, movable elements in the form of twig-like sticks and a free grouping of pearls and precious stones mounted in settings of welded gold. A necklace a bit smaller in size and of an almost identical composition is in the collection of the Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim, Germany. Reinhold Reiling was among the first goldsmiths who after WWII translated the new design vocabulary into jewellery. After his apprenticeship and studies at the Schools of Applied Arts in Dresden and Pforzheim (pupil of Theodor Wende), he became in 1954 first a teacher and in 1969 professor for jewellery design at the Pforzheim School of Applied Arts (later Pforzheim School of Design).
