About the Item
Antique tobacco box finely engraved by hand finely chiseled with rich plant and floral motifs.
Made entirely in 18kt solid gold (punch visible inside) late 800, functioning closure
measures 8 cm xcm5,3 weight 72gr.
Since ancient times, in fact, small closing containers had been used to take with them, to have at hand what could be used for an urgent need. Inside they kept tobacco, ointments, medicines, healing herbs, drugs and even poisons. In Europe the history of tobacco began after the discovery of America in 1492, but the first snuffboxes worthy of the name made their appearance in 1600. From the late eighteenth and up to the mid-twentieth century, there was then a great production of pouches for powders and make-up, cosmetic bags for the theater and clutch bags for gala evenings, all objects that, as we have said, were exhibited above all to show off wealth and nobility.
Among the things that the ladies brought with them, those little boxes in which the sewing tools or personal manicure were kept should not be forgotten. Made of silver, gilded silver, gold and enamels, they were true masterpieces of jewelry. Unfortunately there are very few now!
Today a new form of collecting is beginning to take hold, that of fine boxes and jewelry boxes that were fashionable in the late nineteenth century, and that our great-grandmothers kept on the bedroom dresser.
