Rare Porcelain Figure of 'Salome' by Karl Klaus for Ernst Wahliss

About the Item

A very rare and important figure of 'Salome' holding the head of John The Baptist crafted in Austria. The figure is the work of Karl Klaus (1889-1925) and was crafted by the maker Ernst Wahliss around 1911. The figure depicts Salome, daughter of Herod II and Heordius, standing tall whilst reclining her neck, holding in her hands the severed head of John the Baptist. Richly decorated in a restrained palette of black, white, indigo blue, red and gold the figure is undeniably decorated in the Secessionist taste. Klaus was a student of Josef Hofmann and designed several figures and decorative pieces for Ernst Wahliss under the label 'Serapis Wahliss'. The figure is marked to the inside with the 'Serapis Wahliss' mark along with some registration marks and a rubbed overglaze 'signature' of some kind. Ernst Wahliss by the end of the 19th Century was Vienna's leading porcelain and ceramics retailer. In 1894 he purchased a porcelain factory and began creating his own works under the name 'Ernst Wahliss Kunst, Porzellan und Fayence Fabrik' in Bohemia, today part of the Czech Republic. After Ernst's death his son Gerhard Martin Wahliss continued under his father's name and introduced in 1911 the 'Serapis Wahliss' range of white earthenware decorated in richly coloured enamels and motifs in keeping with the Secessionist taste of the time. The figure is in wonderful condition for a piece of its age. The piece has no chips or cracks and remains free from 'crazing' or structural issues. There is one area of note to the chin of Salome which has what is believed to be a firing/glazing flaw and not later damage, however from the time of manufacture. There is minimal wear to the gilt finish on the figure and in general the piece is in lovely condition. Measures - 29cm H x 9cm Diameter at the base

The set which retain their original fitted box comprise of a small square plinth encased with slices of malachite atop of which sit a figure, each representing one of the four 'seasons'. The figures along with a gilt foot-rim are crafted from 800 purity silver (800 out of 1000 parts pure silver) and are parcel gilt in areas and purposefully oxidised in others. The figures to the underside are stamped for their metal purity, along with an Italian hallmark allowing us to know they were crafted in Italy by a maker called 'Luigi Cervone'. This particular mark for Cervone was only used from 1968 up until his retirement in 1970, allowing us to date the set to between 1968 and 1970. The four are in exceptionally good condition, retain their box and appear to have been virtually never displayed. The quality of the malachite slices...

  • "Barcaccia" Fountain Herend Porcelain Centerpiece Exclusive for SERRA
    By Herend
    Located in Roma, IT
This reproduction of Bernini's Barcaccia, located near the Spanish steps in Rome, was made by Herend exclusively for the Serra shop, using a sterling silver model that Serra had created (with the help of the artist Foscolo Benedetti), and had then supplied to Herend. The director of the prestigious Hungarian manufacture, a great lover of Italian history and art, was so enthusiastic about the model that he proposed making it an elegant and unique centerpiece, exclusive for Serra, which can be decorated with all the famous Herend decorations. Here we see the "Victoria" decoration, made at the end of the 19th century for Queen Victoria, and still used by the English royal house. Pope Urban VIII commissioned Pietro Bernini in 1623 to build the fountain as part of a prior Papal project to erect a fountain in every major piazza in Rome. The fountain was completed between 1627 and 1629 by Pietro possibly along with the help of his son Gian Lorenzo Bernini, especially after his father's death on August 29, 1629. The sculptural fountain is made into the shape of a half-sunken ship...
