Rare Neoclassical Antique Vintage French Empire Silvered Bronze Mantle Clock

About the Item

This is a superb, highly decorative original, and rare authentic antique French Empire silvered bronze mantel clock, circa. 1870. The work is rendered in an elegant neoclassical style and is finely crafted from bronze and silver. The impressive mantel clock stands at an incredible 40 cm high and weighs 15 lbs 43 ozs. The quality of sculpturing is very fine, heavy and exceptionally well modelled, decorated with neoclassical symbols, and undoubtedly made by one of the best clockmakers and French silversmiths of the time. This early elegant clock case is crowned with a swagged urn finial. The dial features a circular white enamel dial, inscribed with elaborate decoration, Roman numeral chapters and flanked by scrolling foliate and swag finials. This exceptional 1st class quality clock comes with twin-barrel movement that strikes on the hour and half-hour on a bell and has one pendulum and two winding keys. Napoleon III was coming to the end of his reign in France by 1870, and the neoclassical style was characterized by Roman-influenced styles, geometric lines, swags, festoons, laurels and wreaths. Silvered bronze is more unusual than other decorative bronze techniques. Silver was generally highly valued, second only to gold, and craftsmen developed methods of applying thin layers of silver onto bronze works for decorative effect. Silvering was not only undertaken for decorative purposes but also to ensure that the black numbers of the dial could be easily read against its white background. Examples of silvered clocks can often be found in several museums around the world. This incredible clock is a must-have for any collector of ornamental and decorative antique pieces. ------------------------------ Condition Report: Very Good (with normal age-related wear, marks and abrasions). The silvered finish with some worn areas reveals the bronze beneath. • Incredibly Rare & Exquisite Singing Bird Box Inspired by Charles Bruguier

Incredibly Rare & Exquisite Singing-Bird Box Inspired by Charles Bruguier Inlaid with Gold, Mother-of-Pearl and Enamel 為珍珠、珍珠母和琺瑯鑲嵌的歌鳥盒 For nearly two centuries, miniature singing bird boxes have captivated collectors around the world. With masterpieces being produced by French, German, and Swiss artisans, these delicate and intricately ornate boxes combine the simple eloquence of technological machinery with fantastic artistry. This particular offering is directly inspired by famed Swiss craftsman Charles Bruguier, produced in a rich and vibrant tortoiseshell fascia. The ornate flower petals and nature motif is offset by the vibrant colors and underlying miniaturized bird with an ivory beak and natural feathers. When wound, the front slide opens the bird lid and activates the movement and song of the finely crafted mechanical device. The detailing of the machinery is remarkable, while the pastoral scene adds a sense of old-world charm to any collection. These were highly sought-after pieces of art by nobles and royalty alike as the utility of automata was still in vogue during the 19th century. Charles Bruguier only crafted 27 singing bird boxes a year from his small studio. Although we cannot verify the origin of this particular piece, the matching artwork...

  • Rare Antique Pocket Key Watch French 1800s with Painted Enamel Dial
    Located in London, GB
Rare Antique Pocket Key Watch French 1800s with Painted Enamel Dial in Working Order An exceptional example of French craftwork estimated from the mid-1800s with delicate enamel painting on the dial and bespoke Roman numerals. Pocket watches have long been a token of style and refinement, even in today’s modern era. During the mid-1800s, this would have been a status symbol as manufacturing had increased so that it was more widely available. Everyone from businessmen to international travelers would have relied on a precise pocket watch to measure the train schedules, daily paper, and end of the work day. In this case, the unique painted enamel on the dial and custom Roman numerals would mean a man of means owned this watch. Instead of relying on a more standard manufactured piece, this would have been hand-finished, demonstrating more wealth. What makes this particular timepiece so rare is the polychrome decoration of a city on the water. When you look closely at the dial, you’ll find detailed decorations of a cartouche and flora motifs perfectly offsetting the silver casement. Both of the keys are attached to a metal chain, and the appearance of the monogrammed FB is evident on the cover metal. A French inscription on the interior reads: “Echappement a Cylindre Aiguilles Quatre Rubiz.” The keys refer to the critical winding and lock set for maintaining the watch. You can also see the makers mark numbered 9356 11509. ------------------------------ Condition Report: In worker order and high quality, considering it is an antique pocket watch. There are minor age-related marks on the silver casement and some fading that will be cleaned and polished before shipping. No damage to the enamel or hands. We service all pocket watches...
