Antique 9 Karat Mizpah Ring, circa 1900

About the Item

Antique 9K gold Victorian "message" ring, "Mizpah", symbolizing a bond between two people. The message comes from a bible quote in the Old Testament text, the book of Genesis, and reads "And Mizpah; for he said, the Lord watch between thee and me, when we are absent one from another". Mizpah is the Hebrew word for "Watchtower", a pillar of stones which symbolized the covenant between Jacob and Laban. Mizpah rings were often exchanged between two people in the hope of protecting the two during a period of separation, often due to war. This Mizpah ring has an appealing modern look with the bold block letters and incising along the sides, as well as an exceptionally 3/8 inch wide band. The ring is a size 8 and suitable for both men and women.

In striking contrast, this Mizpah ring was created c. 1870 in 18 Kt gold. In striking contrast with no wear, the word Mispah is raised in gold letters on a darker gold background. The borders are scalloped. A gold daisy is at the middle of the word. Mizpah is from the Hebrew bible meaning watchtower. The loose translation is May God Watch over you while we are apart. The word connotes a deep emotional relationship between two people. The added sentiment of the daisy is "think of me" which all Victorians recognized from the language of flowers. A beautiful ring of sentient and dedication. A perfect wedding band...
