Antique C1850 14k French Diamond Cluster Ring in the Shape of a Flower Spray

About the Item

This unusual mid nineteenth century Gold and Silver Diamond Cluster ring is a variation of the classic Victorian cluster ring with a twist. The twist is that the the flower cluster is actually set in a mount of silver, with pear shaped diamonds set in 8 "leaves" of gradually increasing size, perfectly asymmetrically symmetrical. The silver mount is then set atop a gold mount with a 14K band. This ring could only be made with by hand as the different size diamonds had to be carved individually. Our cluster ring is entirely open backed and comprised of all old mine cuts diamonds. As is typical of the era, the emphasis is on the stones (or, in this case, the stylized arrangement of stones in the shape of a flower spray) which are set a jour (without foiling) and there is nary a claw in site (the diamonds are held in on the underside of the ring so no unsightly claws are seen). The face of the ring is backed in silver to set off the cool tones of the diamonds. Then the round front face is further set atop a matching size gold base and the gold band's open work "tendrils" reach around to embrace the ring at each side. This method of setting the ring in silver but mounting it in gold was frequently employed by goldsmiths in the Georgian and Victorian eras so that the cool white tones of the diamonds are set off by the cool tones of silver. Our ring can be worn everyday without concern and will not be overly affected by moisture. The diamonds are set in place thanks to the ring's solid construction. This ring is large in scale and best suited for a medium to large hand. Our cluster ring has a center stone of approximately 2 carats. It is a size 7 and weighs 6 grams.

  • Victorian Coral Stickpin of Figural Face in the Motif of the Grotesque
    Located in Baltimore, MD
We love our wonderfully esoteric Grotesque man (or "other") crafted by a talented unknown carver in the 19th century from a chunk of the most desirable orange-red toned coral. Connoisseurs of literature or theater or the arts understand the term Grotesque as referring to fantastical, exaggerated or distorted representations, usually of the human face or figure. (The word "grotesque" originates from the Italian "grottesca", meaning of a cave" (grotto = cave in Italian) and refers to doubled, metamorphosed, or altered forms). Originally Italian, the concept of the Grotesque was used in French and German literature as well, and is a an integral part of English literature and theatre (The Theatre of the Grotesque preceded the Theatre of the Absurd) today. We find our Grotesque stickpin guy (gal) to be not grotesque at all but endearing, with his (or her) exaggerated features and droopy skin folds. And as a reference to classic theatre, this coral stickpin...
