Jade & Demantoid Garnet Ring Victorian Era

About the Item

A spectacular and unique combination if ever there was one: six of the rarest garnets on the planet: Russian demantoid garnets —filled with fire and flash— together with a light spring-green natural and untreated jadeite jade cabochon —a double cabochon, no less— all set within a highly detailed and regal 14K yellow gold setting. The ring dates from around the turn of the previous century but it lacks hallmarks or a maker's mark and it's never been re-sized. I'm thinking it's most likely American in origin. The engraving is quite similar to the American aesthetic at the time; not unlike the work that Tiffany & Co. was doing with their jewelry and also with their trophies and more ceremonial objects. Despite its uncertain country of origin, one thing cannot be disputed: jade and demantoid garnets belong together. You have the refreshing, light spring green cabochon complimented on the shoulders of the band by a triad of intensely firey demantoid garnets from Russia's Ural mountains. And because these are demantoid garnets and have even more fire than diamonds, they're green but they're not *merely* green: they flash blue, yellow, red. The jade gemstone measures approximately 8.37mm x 11.08mm. I am a professionally trained gemologist as well as a second-generation jade collector and I guarantee this to be 100% natural and untreated jadeite jade from Burma. The six 2mm demantoid garnets total approximately .25 carats. They display internal inclusions diagnostic of Russian demantoid garnets. Under magnification, there are abrasions and one garnet is chipped. Like I said, magnification is required to view the wear to the garnets but I know this will trouble some. So I will be including a packet of 5 loose 2.5mm demantoid stones. Your jeweler can replace the chipped garnet with one from the packet. But I would strongly urge you *not* to take this action as it alters the integrity of the ring. But more importantly, the chip doesn't matter. It doesn't impact the gemstone's ability to dazzle. The chip matters to the *head* but not eyes. I totally understand this and when I first began collecting antique jewelry, I was extremely troubled by signs of wear, imperfections, small displays of damage. Now, after many years of collecting, I cherish these signs of wear. I get what I didn't get back then: we all have scars. The journey through life leaves none of us unscathed and that includes our jewels. I believe that *having* the little packet of pristine replacement stones tucked away in a drawer will be comforting and will make you less likely to actually proceed with stone replacement. The ring is a size 4 ¾ and could be resized by your local jeweler. This is one of the most unusual Victorian jade rings I have owned and the workmanship is excellent. None of the engraved details are smeared or worn; everything looks crisp and relatively new.

Wear consistent with age and use. I'm listing this ring as being in "excellent" condition because it is, despite wear to the garnets, one in particular. The jade and the setting are pristine; garnets from this era almost always display wear.
