Antique George II 18K Rococo Style Scrolled Black Enamel Memorial Band, HM 1755

About the Item

Romantic black enameled wavy memorial band divided into scrolls with raised gold lettering for a Mrs. Martha Greswold. This is an excellent example of and 18th-century mourning ring and the wavy bands that emulate scrolls are the most rare. The inscription on the outside of the band reads Martha Greswold, Obit 8 Dec 1755 AE 59. Memorial bands of this period were heavily influenced by French design and marked a departure from memento mori jewelry (with its grim portrayal of one's own death) to a focus on mourning and an emphasis on eternal love and remembrance. The condition of this ring with its sharp black enamel and pristine gold lettering is outstanding. The ring is a large US size 10 ½; If it fits you, you should leap for this wonderful mourning band.
